Turkey straddles two worlds, Europe and Asia, but its relationship with the West has always been troubled. Once dubbed the sick man of Europe, this founding member of NATO has sought membership of the European Union, but always been denied. Today, roles have been reversed. Turkey is booming, with economic growth at 8.5 per cent while its nearest European neighbours are going broke. This economic success has earned the country international respect. Turkey is now acting as a trusted broker with its turbulent neighbours in the Caucasus, Iran, Iraq, Israel, and Syria. Is Turkey a weathervane reflecting the global shift of power? And can the new Ottomans strike a balance between the country’s modern, secular aspirations and its deep-rooted Islamic identity? The Cafe travels to Istanbul, a secular city in an increasingly religious country that is trying to break free from its past. Joining our conversation in The Cafe in Istanbul are guests: Nursuna Memecan, a senior member of parliament representing Turkey’s ruling party, the AKP; Mehmet Karli, a lecturer at Galatasaray University and a human rights activist; Andrew Finkel, a journalist & author of ‘Turkey what everyone needs to know’; Gokce Piskin, a rising star in the CHP, the main opposition party in Turkey, and chairwoman of its youth wing; Merve Kavakci Islam, a professor at Georgetown University and a former member of the Turkish parliament who was prevented from taking up her seat due to her wearing of the headscarf …

09:30 …. ”zero problem policy”….. zero problem policy her ass !!! Turkey has huge problems with every single neighbour and it is all the times Turkey being aggressive against its neighbours than the opposite…
Turkey is a country that understands itself only through aggression. Turks define themselves through aggression. A peaceful Turk is a non-Turk. They cannot exist like that. Once Turkey will become a peaceful country it will disintegrate.
invite mustafa akyol please!
That is callous and vindictive of you. It does you no credit.
I think calling this debate “New Ottomans” was ill-advised. The discussion about modern/AKP Turkey is obviously far too complex and many-sided to be reducible to this simplistic media cliche.
@erdal0 im turkish to thats not real if u look deeper in the history u will see that i was bedouin tribes and how u can talk about a punishment the people of today have nothing to do with it
the more Turkey becomes Islamist the more it gets distanced from the EU and the West. Turkey was a much better place before than it is now. The closer it gets to Israel the more chances it has to become a model country. Hopefully it will be a democratic country and fight terrorists wherever they are.
The MP is terrible. She’s actually writing down arguments instead of just speaking her mind.
Sorry then lets say the only country with some middleeast mentality that can be aceptable for us here in euorpe.
Turks are not Arab
We Turks feel still bad about Arabs. Arabs betrayed us in WW1. You arabs should suffer and Israel is punishment of your crimes against Islam.
why do you assume that islam doesnt care about all those things

I hope turkey remains a great secular society that cares more about its welfare, education, finance and science…
LOL the ancestors that embarrassed them selves in the 19th century? The Turks were laughed at during the 1800s for not taking part of the greater European renascences and science
Well Turks are the only arabs we have here in our small east european country and they are allright, there are some dickheads and been some troubles when some of them were harrasing a girl on disco, but that isnt realy a problem of tursk right.. They are the connection between the west and muslim world I think so I hope they do it right for everyone.
